  • Great Tips To Assist You

    2014 - 07.28

Ready to get started improving your home yourself? But you don’t know what to do or where to start with home improvement? No worries, this article can help you with it. Below are some tips and tricks that can get you started with the basics of home improvement.

Make sure you take before and after photos of any work or improvements you do to your home. You may like to look back on all the hard work and changes when it feels like the project as a whole will never be done. Keep pictures on your computer or have them printed for a scrapbook.

To save on your electric bill, try switching from regular light switches to dimmer switches. Dimmer switches allow you to select how much light you want to use in a particular room. By doing so, you can use less electricity to light a whole room, and add a sense of mood as well.

When it comes to home improvement, be aware that you should never pay more than 35% of the project cost up front as a down payment. This is to ensure that you do not lose your money if the contractor backs out. Always pay by some method of payment that can be tracked such as check, instead of cash. Finally, only pay for the complete job when the job is actually completed.

A good way to get ideas on home improvement can be to look around in a hardware store. Hardware stores will often have plans that can be used to get new ideas for improving ones home. They will also have the needed materials for whatever project one chooses to take on.

If your radiator has gone cold, you may need to bleed it. Simply switch off the boiler and locate the bleed key. Turn the key counterclockwise and air will begin to escape and make a hissing sound. When the sound stops and a little water leaks, turn the bleed key clockwise to close it.

Never neglect an electrical system upgrade when you are making home improvements preparatory to selling your house. Older houses are woefully unequipped for the demands of modern appliances and electronics. Even recently-built homes may lack the power systems that the latest gadgets require. Installing a fully up-to-date electrical service will make your home stand out to potential buyers.

Chimneys, gutters, and downspouts can often get overlooked during home improvements and yearly updating. Make sure to inspect these parts of your home so you can make necessary repairs. Chimneys are fire hazards if they are neglected. Downspouts and gutters can become useless due to debris, which in turn, can cause water damage.

When you are painting your home be sure to use drop cloths or some other type of fabric to catch the paint. If there are paint drips all over floors then it will give buyers a reason to ask for a lower price or prompt them to choose another property.

The saying “Good fences make good neighbors” isn’t highly repeated for no reason. A great home improvement project is to build a fence around your property. Not only will this increase your property value but it will also give you an additional sense of security and some additional privacy, not to mention they tend to help with neighborly relations.

To increase your kitchen’s value without spending a lot of money, add a new backsplash. Backsplashes are highly desired by buyers, and can make your kitchen look more put together. To save money, use a material like tin tile or stainless steel in place of costly ceramic tile. Be sure to pick out something that compliments your kitchen’s color scheme.

To showcase a particularly beautiful flowerbed or landscaping detail, steal this trick from noted horticulturists and botanic garden curators: position outdoor accent lighting fixtures behind plants or statuary to dramatically reveal the unique shapes, textures, and form of shrubs, flowers, and ornamental grasses. This is a particularly effective technique for single-color gardens or landscapes.

For a high-impact update that can be completed in less than a day, consider freshening up your front door with one or two coats of brightly colored, ultra-glossy paint. Homes with light-colored brick or siding look best with a bright red or blue door; darkly colored homes do best with a deep, cool color like eggplant or slate blue.

Many newer homes feature an open space between the kitchen and adjacent room. While most people are content to simply leave the area untouched, you can easily modify it to resemble a Euro-style breakfast bar, complete with two or three bistro chairs, pendant lighting, and unique decorative napkin holders or accent pieces.

To create a modern focal point in your living room or study, consider installing a new stone, brick, or wood mantel for the area above your fireplace. If your fireplace already has a mantel, you can have it sanded and refinished to change its look. You could also update it by staining the brick or concrete with a rich color.

If you want to make your pathway in front of your house look nicer, you can line your pathway with little lights. This adds a touch of elegance and class to your walkway. Additionally, it gives your guests targeted light so that they can find the way to your door more easily.

If you are a smoker, purchase an ozone spray and paint your walls before putting your house on the market. Also move all smoking to the outside of your home. Smoke odors can quickly turn off a potential buyer. Some people are very sensitive to them and they can be difficult to get rid of too, making your house hard to sell.

With the previous tips floating through your thoughts, you ought to be ready to get started on your own home improvement projects! It does take some hard work and some attention to details, but if you keep at it, it is indeed achievable. So, go out there, enjoy yourself and start improving your home!

    GOAT Run

    Event on 2014-09-06 00:00:00

Marathon The inaugural Great Olympic Adventure Trail Run (GOAT Run) is a one-way trail marathon on a route that traverses Kelly Ridge between the Olympic National Park and the Strait of Juan de Fuca in Washington State. The race follows the entire length of the Olympic Adventure Trail (21+ miles of single track and about 4 miles of gravel logging road), and finishes with less than a mile of pave road to get to the finish line at Lake Crescent, inside Olympic National park.

The race starts at 8:30 a.m. on September 6, 2014, and is limited to the first 250 runners. Registration, which starts on May 1, is . Runners will park in the town of Joyce, and will be shuttled to the start line. Runners will be shuttled back to their cars in Joyce from the lake when they are ready. Shuttles are free and mandatory.

Packet pickup will take place on Friday, September 5, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Barhop Brewing & Taproom. On Saturday morning starting at 7:00 am, packet pickup will take place at Crescent Grange in Joyce, Washington. Arrive early enough to check in and be ready for the 8:00 a.m. shuttle.

No t-shirts for this run-runners get a GOAT Run pint glass to commemorate the run. Prizes will be prizes raffled off at the post-run party! A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Peninsula Trails Coalition for the construction and maintenance of the Olympic Discovery Trail and Olympic Adventure Trail.

    Event Start Location
    Port Angeles, Washington

    Course Description
The 26.15-mile course starts near the Elwha River, just ½ mile from the start of a landmark dam removal project (when both dams are removed, the Elwha River will flow freely for the first time in 100 years!).

The route follows the entire length of the Olympic Adventure Trail, 21+ miles of single-track trail and 4 miles of forest road. The final ¾ mile of the race is on a paved road, finishing with a bang as runners enter Olympic National Park at the deep, glacially carved Lake Crescent.

Famous for its turquoise blue waters of exceptional clarity, the lake is the perfect place to end the race. The finish line is at Log Cabin Resort on the lake, and runners will be greeted by stunning lake and mountain views, food, and fun. There are rooms, cabins, and campsites at the resort (how great would it be to have your room right at the finish line?), as well as public showers, restrooms, beach, restaurant and beer!

The course reaches a maximum elevation of 1,722 feet, with a cumulative elevation gain of 2,260 feet over the 26-mile rolling course. The first mile and the last mile are… uh… really hard. The hills in the middle grind on and on. The last logging road stretch? Where it looks flat on the elevation profile? Nope. Misleading. That's gonna hurt too. Challenging? Absolutely! This is a difficult course. But it's worth it! The trail is impeccably constructed and maintained, and goes through a variety of forest ages. Highlights include a view up the Elwha Valley from the "living room" at mile 3.5, stunning water views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca over to Vancouver Island in Canada, and an incredible log bridge over Whiskey Creek near the town of Joyce. And of course Lake Crescent, the biggest highlight of them all.

There will be minimal aid stations for the GOAT Run, and runners should be prepared to be self-sufficient and carry water and food as needed. The six aid stations will be at approximately miles 3.2, 7.5, 12.5, 16, 20, and 23. There will be food and drinks at the finish line as well. Sanicans will be available the start and finish, and at miles 7.5, 12.5, and 20.

    Packet Pickup / Expo
Packet pickup will take place on Friday, September 5, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Barhop Brewing & Taproom. On Saturday morning starting at 7:00 am, packet pickup will take place at Crescent Grange in Joyce, Washington. Arrive early enough to check in and be ready for the 8:00 a.m. shuttle.

    Timing / Results
    The race will be timed.

    Post Race Activities
Snacks and beer at Log Cabin Resort on Lake Crescent inside Olympic National Park. There is a restaurant as well and runners will each receive a coupon towards a meal.

    Advice On Dental Care Straight

    2014 - 07.25

How much do you know about taking care of your teeth? Wouldn’t it help you to find out more concerning dental work? Well, this article is going to assist you in doing that. Having a good set of teeth is important to you, and you just need to know how you make that happen.

To help whiten your teeth brush using baking soda. Baking soda is known for its disinfecting and cleaning properties. To use simply sprinkle a small amount of baking soda in your hand and dip your wet toothbrush into the baking soda. Then, gentle brush your teeth for at least two minutes.

If you would like healthier teeth, you need to do more than just brush them each day. You need to floss and swish with an antiseptic mouthwash. Germs not killed by brushing are killed by mouthwash. Floss lets you get to food and plaque found between the teeth. Go for the trifecta if you want healthy teeth.

Do not let unknown discomfort go unattended. There are various reasons you may feel discomfort in your teeth or jaw. You could be experiencing the cutting of a wisdom tooth or you may have developed an infection. Make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible to avoid further complications. It is better to know it is minor, than to ignore it until it is major.

Did you know that you can correct your teeth color with the right shade of lipstick? Colors that have a blue tone can help the appearance of your teeth. Lipsticks that are light do the opposite. If you have a bright, white smile, the lipstick may cause them to look yellow.

To ensure your teeth are getting properly cleaned, make it a point to brush your teeth for a minimum of two minutes. It’s very easy to get bored when brushing your teeth, and boredom can lead to a rush job. However, thinking of a favorite song or some other pleasant thought during brushing can help pass the time. It’s important to give your teeth the attention they deserve.

Be sure to floss at least once daily. It gets rid of plaque and bacteria between the teeth where brushes cannot reach. It’s also necessary for keeping your gums healthy. You can either floss in the morning or at night; however, just don’t forget to floss.

When choosing a dentist, don’t forget to think about location. Do you work? Would it be more convenient to go to someone who is near your office? Or would you prefer to go to someone that is close to your house? If it is inconvenient to get to your dentist, you might not go, which is why it is important to consider this factor.

If you require a filling in one or more of your teeth, choose wisely. Tooth-colored composite fillings are an attractive, discrete option. However, this type of filling also happens to be less durable than most metal fillings. Metal fillings are also a better option for larger areas. Remember, looks aren’t everything!

Eating when you’re not hungry not only adds weight, but can also increase your risk of cavities. If you snack throughout the day, you expose your teeth to more cavity-causing bacteria, sugars and acid. Thus, you should eat only when you’re hungry in order to protect your dental health.

It can be quite uncomfortable to be intimately engaged in a conversation with someone who has horrible breath. Maybe it is something they ate, or just plain old bad dental care habits. Whatever the case may be, a good way to help yourself out of this situation is to carry around gum or mints. Have one yourself and offer them one at the same time. This makes a polite gesture a successful covert operation.

Don’t buy into the myth that you should brush your teeth immediately after consuming citrus products. Due to the composition of your teeth, you could actually cause harm by brushing right away. Swishing with mouthwash and popping in a piece of sugar-free gum is a much healthier alternative for your teeth.

If you’re searching for the right dentist, check around to see what you can find out. Ask family and friends, check online reviews, and talk to patients of dentists you’re considering. All of this will help you make a much better judgment call as to which dentist you’re going to use in the future.

It’s best to buy a toothbrush which has soft or medium bristles and a small head. This ensures you can get it into all the crevices and beneath your gums to get out all the gunk which is left behind during the day and night. Brush gently but firmly each time.

If you find yourself away from a toothbrush and with a less-than-clean feeling, eating certain types of food can help. Any food that is crisp, natural and firm will gently rub away debris on the surface of your teeth. Fruits and veggies like apples, celery and carrots are perfect for this purpose.

Eat an apple everyday. This tip has been around forever, leaving some to believe that it is just an old myth, but it is not. Apples are full of vitamins that are good for your teeth and also make your teeth stronger because eating an apple is like a workout for your teeth.

Many people with bad breath are missing one important part of their oral hygiene process – brushing their tongue! In fact, just by brushing their tongue, people find that they quickly fix their problem and end up with fresh, clean breath in no time, so give it a try yourself!

If your teeth are sensitive, most dentists recommend that you use a special toothpaste available at the drug store or even discount retailers to help seal up the tubules leading to the nerves in your teeth. This is the best way to deal with the problem once and for all.

Having found out what it takes to take care of your teeth, you are ready to make it happen. There is no need to just blindly let your dentist take care of your mouth. Empowered by knowledge, you have what it takes to ensure that your mouth is in good hands.

As always, helmets and a flat repair kit are REQUIRED. SAG will not be provided.

    Run:
Feel free to run right after the ride, instead of the ride or anytime you wish.  The run will be an out-and-back of your desired distance on the Capital Crescent Trail (paved) or the C&O Towpath (unpaved).

Arrive early enough to check in and be ready for the 8:00 a.m. shuttle.

Arrive early enough to check in and be ready for the 8:00 a.m. shuttle.
